People who radiate in four borders

四條邊內發光的人

An installation of expanded painting, 4.5m x 2.4m

People who radiate in four borders, exhibited at Familiar strangeness, The Gallery of the Hong Kong Art School, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 5 July - 8 August 2024

In a format of expanded painting, People who radiate in four borders reflected on my daily encounter with familiar strangers who advocated in transit advertising light boxes. It included a set of three portraits depicting subjects with dazzling faces and bombastic expressions. The paintings were connected to a set of sculpted and painted papier-mâché, which transformed advertising messages to semi-abstract script-like form with lost meaning.

A blaze of light within four borders dazzled like icons in a shrine. Walking through the passage, the images on both sides faded behind me. The familiar faces gradually morphed into unfamiliar remnants, while the incessant words lingered like pallid halos.
